Devotional Readings

Why would you want to read other devotional writers when you have me?  That's a good one!  I've assembled here a few of the classics of devotional writing over the past hundred years or so.  There's so much that's so excellent out there, I should really wonder why anyone would want to read my stuff.  But I guess these people could have just as easily looked at the list of their predecessors and said the same thing.

Oswald Chambers wrote My Utmost for His Highest many years ago.  One of the greatest devotional texts of all time.  Maybe it's the greatest.  In this edition, the language has been updated but the thoughts remain just as profound.  This is a leather-bound edition, which costs only a few dollars more than a paperback.  This is a book that you'll want to have in a permanent binding.

Morning and Evening represents something of a departure for C.H. Spurgeon.  The great British Baptist preacher preached enough sermons, still in print, to fill a lengthy bookshelf, but he's less well known for his shorter, more quiet devotional material.  Still, Morning and Evening is a classic that remains in print because of its power in the human soul.

In this morning and evening, 365-day devotional featuring her best-loved work, Streams in the Desert, and its popular sequel, Springs in the Valley, Mrs. Charles E. Cowman invites you to tune out the clamor and concerns of today and let these quiet meditations fill your soul with peace.

Brennan Manning, a former monk, has served as an inspiration to a number of well known people.  The most notable of these for me, singer-songwriter Rich Mullins, adopted the Ragamuffin tag for himself and his band.  Manning writes in a contemporary style for a contemporary world, still rough around the edges.
