A contemporary of Isaiah, Micah carries much of the same message.  He warns about the impending doom of the wayward nation of Israel, a message which, despite the grim events the people could see in the Northern Kingdom, those in Judah largely dismissed.  He also, however, brings a message of hope, promising a great ruler to be born in Bethlehem.

Left: Micah from an illuminated manuscript.

The Bare Facts

Who:  Unlike Amos, we do not know Micah's profession.  It is assumed that he was younger than Isaiah, but only since he began his prophetic career after Isaiah.

Where:  In Micah 1:1 we find that Micah hailed from Moresheth, spelled "Mareshah."  (Look above the "D" in "Judah.")

When:  Micah prophesied during the reigns of three kings of Judah: Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah. (Micah 1:1)

What:  Micah related a vision he saw regarding Samaria (capital of the Northern Kingdom, Israel) and Jerusalem (capital of the Southern Kingdom, Judah).

Memorable Passages

3:12-13 Shepherd analogy, comparable to John 10.
5:2-4 Messianic prophecy.  Messiah to be born in Bethlehem.
6:8 The "Golden Rule" of the Old Testament
