As important as is Genesis to the
overall message of the Bible, we can argue that Exodus is just as vital.
In the space of these forty chapters, God goes from working with
individuals--Abraham, Isaac, and, here, Moses--to working with an entire
people. We see the perennial problem of God's providence and grace
being met by the people's disobedience. Just as importantly, we see
the marvelous story of God's long-suffering love unfolded.
Look further through Exodus and you'll find such cornerstones of the
faith as the Ten Commandments and the Passover. The deliverance of the
people from Egypt by God is referred to time and time again through the
writings and the prophets and on into the New Testament, where the author of
Hebrews, perhaps most notably, uses the theme extensively.
