What a sermon! That's the
response to Deuteronomy that jumps to my mind first. Moses, after
leading the twelve tribes around the wilderness for forty years and watching
the entire generation of adults who had left Egypt die off, finds himself at
the end of his career. Before passing his staff over to Joshua, Moses
takes one more chance to preach.
Liberal scholars tend to assume a later
date for Deuteronomy, assuming this to be the book discovered in the temple
during Josiah's reign. While the book may have been re-discovered at
that time, the consensus among the skeptics is that the priests discovered
it by writing it.
