Called the Old Testament in Christian circles and the Tanakh, Jewish Bible,
or simply Bible in Jewish circles, this collection of thirty-nine separate books
records God's dealings with the human race and particularly with the descendents
of Abraham from the dawn of time to about 400 B.C.

Introduction
- Discovering the Bible: The Old Testament
- This multi-page resource from BibleNet gives an historical context to the
study of the Old Testament.
- An Introduction to Jewish Sacred Scriptures
- A useful, although liberally oriented, academic introduction to the Old
Testament.
- Reading the Old Testament
- Barry Bandstra's tour through the Hebrew Bible.
- Bible Thoughts and
Themes: The Old Testament
- A book covering major Old Testament themes by Horatius Bonar
- The Bible--Its 66 Books in Brief
- The Old Testament portion of an overview by L.M. Grant.
- Books of the
Hebrew Scriptures
- This is the front door to a discussion of scripture by the group
"Religious Tolerance." While they tend to be more tolerant of liberal
than conservative views, they do provide a useful overview of both approaches.
- The Bible History, Old
Testament
- An online book, originally published in seven volumes from 1876 to 1887.
By Alfred Edersheim.
Texts & Language Tools
- Introduction to
Biblical Hebrew
- A brief glimpse into the language of the Old Testament. You're not
going to be reading the Psalms after studying this, but it's an interesting
start. Written by an LDS author, apparently.
- The B-Hebrew Mailing List Home
Page
- B-Hebrew is an e-mail conference of academic professionals, teachers,
students, clergy and laity, people of any faith, devoted to a better
understanding of the Hebrew Bible. As such we often discuss a variety of
topics related to the Biblical languages, the history of the text and its
study, the culture of the Ancient Near East, the literary analysis of the
Hebrew Bible, and more.
- Old Testament Texts
- The Jewish Publication Society provides links to several different
versions of the Old Testament from this page. The versions available
are two in English, the JPS and the Kaplan versions. Also available
here are three non-English versions: a Hebrew version, the Masoretic
text, and an Aramaic text. These last three are provided from a school
in Israel and have no English explanation that I could locate, making the
JPS interface very helpful unless your Hebrew is very good.
- Hebrew Bible
- This is another site that provides a Hebrew text of the Old Testament.
- Hebrew Lexicon
- This is the StudyLight lexicon. Keyed to Strong's numbers, it
provides definitions and audio files of pronunciations for all words.
You can also see how often each word appears in each Old Testament book.
You'll need to download their Hebrew fonts for fullest usage.
- Greek
Septuagint Old Testament
- The people at God's Sight have provided this online, browsable version of
the LXX Greek Old Testament.
Books and Bibliographies
- Prolegomena to the History of Israel
- A seminal work by the esteemed German Bible scholar Julius Wellhausen. This work posits the theory that Judaism as we
know it did not originate with Moses but developed after the fall of Judah and
the reforms of Ezra.
- Bibliographic
Introduction to the Old Testament
- A brief and very academic list of sources from Yale Divinity School.
- Old
Testament Bibliography
- A lengthy bibliography of wide-ranging sources.
