Matthew, the apostle, came to follow Christ from his first career as a tax-collector. In the painting to the right, Jesus, dressed in the red robe, is calling the publican Matthew from his tax shop. Matthew's gospel is notable for its emphasis on Jesus as the Messiah, the establisher of the Kingdom of God. In doing this, Matthew seems to be speaking to a particularly Jewish audience. He places more emphasis (and less explanation) on Jewish customs and scriptures than do his peers. Written without a doubt before A.D. 110 since Ignatius quotes the gospel in that year, Matthew probably wrote somewhere in the mid first century. |
