Luke, the author of both the third gospel and Acts, wrote more of the New Testament than anyone else. A Renaissance man long before the Renaissance, Luke combined a practice of medicine with history writing and evangelism. Legend has it that Luke also served as an artist. After a vision of the Madonna and Child, Luke is reputed to have painted the first icon. He is therefore held up as the patron saint of painters. More plausibly, Luke appears to have been a companion of Paul on some of his missionary journeys. His gospel is notable not because Luke was an eye-witness to the events--he probably wasn't--but because he talked to them and endeavored to set down his account in chronological order. |
