Romans

A church with problems?  That's a situation unique to the 1st century, isn't it?  Paul, having founded the church in Corinth, heard of the problems that had arisen there in his absence.  What sorts of problems?  You name it.  They had developed a mixed up theology and had allowed divisions over relatively unimportant doctrinal issues to cause rifts within the church.  He spends pages trying to dismiss and dispel these problems before leading up to the climax of love in chapter 13.

TheBare Facts

Who:  The first word of the epistle reveals its author, Paul, who founded the church in Corinth, as related in Acts 18, in about A.D. 50.

Where:  In 16:8, Paul indicates that he would like to "stay on at Ephesus," suggesting that as his location at the time of the writing.

When:  Obviously this letter comes after A.D. 50 and before the death of Paul.  The conservative consensus places its date at around 55 or 56.

What:  1 Corinthians is an attempt by Paul to set right some problems that have arisen in this church.  Specifically, he hopes to counter worldly wisdom with Spiritual wisdom and to heal the rifts that have arisen in the church.
